Jesus walked this lonesome valley. He had to walk it by Himself; O, nobody else could walk it for Him, He had to walk it by Himself.   (American Spiritual)

All of us are familiar with these hauntingly beautiful words, which our choir often sings at our Tenebrae Service. The second stanza continues:

“We must walk this lonesome valley, We have to walk it by ourselves.”

Apparently as slaves could not read, they missed the reassurance of Psalm 23.

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4

During this Easter season, we are reassured as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, that we are never alone. In the darkest times of our lives, we can always turn to God.

Father,
We love You and thank You for the greatest sacrifice of Your Son so we never have to “walk this lonesome valley.”  Amen

The Presbytery Corner... Submitted by Vicky Rinehart

Did you know...

The Presbytery Committee on Compassion Ministries

bulletpurchased $12,000 of White Supreme seed potatoes for distribution throughout the Presbytery to food pantries, agencies, and churches. The idea of the Potato Project is to plant a seed potato and share your potato crop and/or seed potatoes in the coming year; a potentially self-perpetuating project!

bulletNOTE: The Seed Potato Project is funded by the monthly 2˘ a meal hunger offering.

bulletConsiders the environment a part of the ministry of the Presbyterian Church:

Churches who use palm branches could consider ordering those from “Eco-Palm”, a group that harvests palm branches with minimal environmental impact and with the profit going back to the indigenous people of Central America who harvest the branches.

“Presbyterians Go Green” - reusable grocery bags are being considered as an environmental project.

bulletOrganizing a mission trip to the Presbytery of Southeast Louisiana in October, 2008, to include skilled and unskilled participants to assist with post-Katrina rebuilding projects.

7. Joe Bowen, Chairman reported that this committee met on February 26, 2008, where they elected Joe Bowen as Chairman. There was a discussion for a need for an annual financial review to better inform the Session members and to conform with the Book of Order. The committee discussed contacting a CPA to do this review. It was also discussed to look into what funds the church holds and whether the restrictions on those funds are being followed. The CPA will be asked to put a footnote at the bottom of their review on each fund explaining the restrictions. There was also a discussion to improve the church website, with broader information from church members and groups to involve the entire church. The committee could like to amend the budget to include money to support the web design and updates. Vicky Rinehart mentioned that she had spoken with Gary Sergent on this topic and he can make the necessary changes to the website for $250.00 with a monthly fee of $50.00 for updates. Joe Bowen mentioned that the committee reviewed CDs for various reports, such as the Tynes Fund. The committee would like to invest the Tynes fund in an account with Scott and Stringfellow.

8. The Worship Committee passed out lists of guest ministers from January 1, 2008 until April 27, 2008. Anne Sergent then asked for any volunteers for liturgists beginning in April. David Pruitt agreed to be liturgist on April 6, 2008 and Frank Barnes on April 13, 2008. The worship committee was asked to inquire if any non-Session members would also like to serve as liturgists. April 6, 2008 is communion Sunday and Eddie Nash will be conducting service on that Sunday. The Pastoral Care Committee agreed to take care of home communions.
