The members of each Presbyterian Church have the privilege to elect
Elders to represent them on the Session. The Session makes most of the
decisions for the church, and it is very important to elect men and women
who will take seriously the privilege and responsibility to serve as Elders.
This year’s Nominating Committee will take seriously your suggestions of
church members to be considered for nomination. Please help the Nominating
Committee by filling out the form in this “Lamplighter” to make your
suggestions for Elders and next year’s Nominating Committee.
You will elect six Elders this year to serve for three years on the
Session. Bernard Beavers, Estella Catron and Peggy Riley were elected last
year to serve on this year’s Nominating Committee, and the Session selected
Randall Cooper (Chm.) and Karen Ray. Please turn in your forms to the church
office or give to any member of the Nominating Committee.
The Book of Order states: “Elders are called by God to exercise
leadership, government, and discipline in the local church. Elders should be
persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their manner of life should
be a demonstration of the Christian Gospel, both within the church and the
world.”
When making your suggestions, consider whether the person is involved in
church activities: Sunday School, Presbyterian Women, the choir, committees,
Worship, nursery duty, Bible Study, volunteer work, etc.

Reminder: In August, our Community Outreach will be back on
regular “second-Wednesday-at-the church” schedule, after having had our July
gathering at the Historic Crab Orchard Museum in celebration of “Pioneer
Week”.
Community Outreach for August will be Wednesday, August 8th, at 11:00
A.M. when we hope to have a speaker from SVCC to give us information about
senior classes, nutrition, etc.
Plan to attend and enjoy a lunch of fried chicken, vegetables, rolls and
desserts. Everyone is welcome and we always have great food and a great time
and lots of appreciative seniors.

The Worship Committee, Anne Sergent, Chairman, has done a tremendous job
in arranging for guest speakers in the absence of a Pastor or Interim: Kevin
Campbell, Eddie Nash, George Conn, Tom Conley in July; and some of the
speakers scheduled to speak in August: Eddie Nash, Bill Wing, Dr. Wright,
hopefully, and George Conn.

gone we still hold dear; there’s a name, each one shining in the flames, and
we know that every candle has a name.” (John W. Storey)

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER
“Oh, God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry; when I
have work, help me to remember the jobless; when I have a warm home, help me
to remember the homeless; when I am without pain, help me to remember those
who suffer; and remembering, help me to destroy my complacency and bestir my
compassion. Make me concerned enough to help, by word and deed, those who
cry out for what we take for granted.” (Samuel F. Pugh)
Jesus said to His disciples: “My heart is moved with pity for the
crowd...” He took seven loaves and a few small fish, blessed them and
distributed them. About 4,000 people ate their full." (Mark 8: 2-9)
Please don’t forget to bring spaghetti and sauce each month for the Food
Pantry. Also, in the month of August we will be collecting school supplies
for our clients with children. Bring them to the church or drop them by the
Food Pantry Monday - Friday, 11:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.
We continue to feed between 155 and 175 families each month and many have
children. Thanks to everyone in advance for all the help our church gives.
In Christ,
Pam Irvin, Director

Our sympathy to Helen Woody whose husband died recently.
Our thanks to Jim Bob and Madeline Hurt of Tazewell and Donna
Bartgis of Lexington, NC for making contributions to help with the expenses
of the Lamplighter.

Letter dated June 27th, 2007
Dear Members of the Presbyterian Women:
Thank you all so very much for the beautiful reception last Sunday
following the magnificent music program. It gave us all a time to rejoice
and to enjoy the fellowship with the many people who came to celebrate my
retirement. I must admit that I did not eat a single cookie, as I was so
excited about everything, but I did drink at least five glasses of the
delicious punch. I have enjoyed the cookies this week at Bible School.
The flowers in church were so beautiful and I watered them today in hopes
that they will make it through next Sunday. I am most grateful to each of
you for all that you have done during my ministry for Charlotte and me.
Without you, the church would never be what it is.
Please know that I will keep you in my prayers as you welcome a new
minister.
Love,
Charlotte and Jimmy

REMINDER: Our annual Worship Service and Church Picnic has been
scheduled for Sunday, August 19th, at the Crab Orchard Museum.
Fellowship & Mission Committee

The Today Show currently searches for the most beautiful place in the
United States. It does not take a contest for me to discover that. My
backyard in August, October, December, April and every other month fills the
bill. A hummer at the feeder, scarlet leaves carpeting the ground, snow
flakes piling on the maples, or the first spring beauty guarantees delight.
Pairing that with any person I love, observing it with me, provides all the
loveliness my heart can hold.
God did not gift all of us with the ability to travel widely to see the
wonders of the world, but He did give all of us nearby earthly beauty and
imagination. More importantly, He allows us to glimpse a bit of spiritual
perfection in those surrounding us. Perhaps a daily quest for the internal
beauty in people we meet will give us greater rewards than tangible signs.
We just need to seek.
“...seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks,
the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7: 7-8)
Our loving Father,
Be with us as we seek for beauty close by. Please help us to cultivate the
beauty within us.
Amen
